abstract: Since people compare themselves to others or themselves from the past (Kingdon & Knight, 2003), someone's relative poverty might influence the individual's wellbeing more than absolute or relative income. One has to keep in mind poverty depends on more than just income (Townsend, 2006). This research revolves around the research question: 'what is the effect of relative poverty on an individual's wellbeing?' This research has proven the relation between relative poverty and an individual's wellbeing, and between relative wealth and an individual's wellbeing. People who feel relatively poor have a lower wellbeing than those feeling relatively the same or relatively wealthy. Relative poverty affects an individual's physical wellbeing, social wellbeing and development and activity. Relative poverty influences physical wellbeing the most. Furthermore, this research has proven money does matter more for those at low income levels, when compared to individuals at higher income levels.
