An online survey was placed in Facebook groups and spread through running and cycling associations to gather the needed data. Descriptive statistics and Chi Square tests were used for data analysis. The results indicate that the urban fringe is already used a lot by urban-based runners and cyclists in the Netherlands. Factors that are seen as important when runners and cyclists choose a location to sport in include: traffic, busyness, proximity, accessibility, aesthetics, greenery, amenities like availability of cycling and walking paths, safety, and maintenance. Suggested planning interventions in the urban fringe are: improving the aesthetics and greenery by planting more trees and improving safety, improving accessibility and separating traffic and sportspeople by installing more dedicated walking and cycling paths. date: 2017 date_type: published thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: SGP tutors_name: Strijker, D. tutors_name: Silveira Brito, M. keywords_local: Running keywords_local: Urban fringe keywords_local: Physical activity keywords_local: Built environment keywords_local: Cycling keywords_local: Health language_iso: nl titleorder: Making the urban fringe more attractive for running and cycling purposes dbi: 59897673e1ee0 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ba/SGP/2017/ljschaafsma/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132455-59897673e1ee0.xml date_issued: 2017-01-01 citation: Schaafsma, L.J.
