Administrative panel data from the German Pension Insurance on 4,237 first-time mothers is used. The results show that the probabilities of becoming sick increase with the duration of the maternity leave. When differentiating between characteristics of women, high-income- and poor-health- mothers show higher probabilities of sickness increasing with the maternity leave length. Average- and reduced working hours-mothers show lower and more stable probabilities of sickness across the leave durations. Also, sickness probabilities seem to increase over time for only long-leave mothers. A selection effect of maternity leave durations on mothers’ health outcomes can be concluded. date: 2019 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: POPST tutors_name: Rutigliano, R keywords_local: Administrative data keywords_local: Demography keywords_local: Germany keywords_local: Mothers’ health keywords_local: Maternity leave keywords_local: Panel data keywords_local: Discrete-time event history analysis language_iso: en titleorder: Maternity leave durations and the relevance of selection: A demographic approach to maternal health outcomes after maternity leave for first-time mothers in Germany dbi: 5dcbe73739861 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/PopSt/2019/lbister/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132455-5dcbe73739861.xml date_issued: 2019-01-01 citation: Bister, Lara (2019) Maternity leave durations and the relevance of selection: A demographic approach to maternal health outcomes after maternity leave for first-time mothers in Germany.
