The theoretical foundations of the research are the Person-Environment Fit model and the age-friendly cities of the WHO. Data have been collected through ten in-depth, semi-structured interviews and seven walking interviews. The findings showed that for the participants, adapting the home and using informal care was a way to cope with barriers in and outside the home. Physical accessibility and proximity of facilities and activities were important characteristics in the village and did not always meet the needs of the participants. Concluding, the importance of the garden, the (electrical) bicycle and the need for homes in the village where care could be provided, turned out to be more significant than previous literature suggested. date: 2017 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: POPST tutors_name: Meijering, L. keywords_local: Ageing in the home keywords_local: Subjective wellbeing keywords_local: Older adults keywords_local: Age-friendly villages keywords_local: Ageing outside of the home language_iso: en titleorder: Towards an age-friendly village dbi: 5a0dafe3dcd58 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/PopSt/2017/mjfowler/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132455-5a0dafe3dcd58.xml date_issued: 2017-01-01 citation: Fowler, M.J.
