Abstract

This research paper analyses the relationship between the current housing market conditions in Berlin, Germany, and the quality of life among students. The qualitative data that the study is based upon has been conducted in ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews with students that live in Berlin, including both incomers and being from Berlin originally. The focus was put on the effect on the financial and mental well-being of the students. The concepts of Quality of Life (QoL), housing quality, environment and costs, housing affordability/stress and students and their academic performance in relation to housing are elaborated further. The results show that the students´ financial well-being is more affected by the current housing market conditions in Berlin than their mental well-being. Furthermore, the students are financially constraint in their expenses and have to make compromises in terms of rental price, housing location and housing quality.
