Abstract

Transportation is tool enabling communication of different geographical locations. Various areas relative to geography, the economic, political, regional and historical geography and demography, are involved in transportation geography. Affecting factors for demand and supply of transportation are included in these fields derived from literature. Then a model is built to visualize the relationship of these influential factors and of demand and supply interaction in the research. Contextual factors are added to the model that can explain the causes of the mismatch between demand and supply and the current situation of railway transportation development in China. Economic losses and social tension are the main problems resulted from the mismatch between demand and supply. To mitigate the disparity, various current used or possible measures as well as the recommended approach, the construction of an analogous spoke-and-wheel network, of this thesis are analyzed and evaluated by qualitative criterion—feasibility, efficiency and rationality.
