Abstract

Likability is an effective word to describe the aesthetic quality of a neighbourhood. Using 5 operational criteria, streetscapes can be judged aesthatically. The opinions of most 'normal' people vary, but only within a certain bandwith. This is contradictory to popular belief, yet opens up many ways to improve the aesthetic quality of future building plans. Often there are large differences in the preferences of professionals and laypeople. The perspective of the laypeople is used to determine likability. In this thesis a literature research, mainly based on environmental psychology, is used to analyze and judge the likability of 3 streetscapes in the Netherlands. For each of these case studies, two in-depth interviews were conducted with professionals who worked on the cases. The cases had been selected by them on their aesthetic quality, to serve as best-practice examples for designing streetscapes and to place the literature in a Dutch perspective.
