Abstract

This thesis contributes to understanding international study migration in general and of emotional factors affecting the decision of British students to go to the Netherlands in particular. An exploratory, qualitative, interview approach was used. A number of determinants were identified. Some extend existing theory, whereas others were previously underemphasised. The most notable new aspects are that jealousy of exciting adventures of prior study migrants, and anticipated increased social standing amongst peers by being seen to study in an attractive foreign location, all intensified by social media, can be strong influences. In addition, the visual component of communication media facilitates potentially homesick students in feeling comfortable abroad, much more than audio-only media. In general, a complex and varied set of emotionally-oriented reasons are involved in the decision to migrate.
