Abstract
This research explores the experiences of Dutch young adults growing up in intergenerational poverty, and aims to acquire deeper knowledge about how these young adults perceive the need and opportunities for reduced capability deprivation through education. By defining poverty as a capability deprivation, their individual needs and opportunities are taken into account. Through semi-structured interviews with students and teachers, it becomes clear that the students strive towards being educated and being employed, and through that hope to achieve stability and independence. There are various factors that influence their success, such as social networks, place of residence, costs of education, and access to information and pathways of opportunity. Schools assist their students by offering support, sharing knowledge and encouraging students. This support could be more conducive by formulating guidelines on recognizing and handling poverty, ensuring the necessity of mandatory books and creating a safety-net for those that cannot afford these items.
