Abstract
As the interest and need to shift from an engine-based mobility to an active mobility is increasing, this research focuses on pedestrian experiences and urban policies related to walking in Groningen Netherlands. This paper researches through interviews with pedestrians and policy-makers the different needs, opportunities and abilities pedestrians have to walk around in the city of Groningen and more precisely within 3 neighbourhoods (Vinkhuizen, Helpman and Binnenstad). The data collected from the policy-makers allowed to study how the city of Groningen deals with pedestrians and the different methods used to promote this type of active mobility. The author concludes on the emerging concepts gathered from walkers experiences and on the need for the municipality to research further the experiences of pedestrians.
