Abstract
There are several issues relating MSW management in Indoensia, although regulations of MSW management were promulgated in recent years. The issues relates to lower citizens awareness concerning appropriate MSW disposal, lower service coverage, and lower budgeting. Nevertheles, Indonesia has many informal stakeholders such as scavengers, junkmen, lapaks, and bandars who are probably beneficial when they are well organized. This study explores the MSW management in the United States and in Indonesia. It describes the similarities and the differences, and explains the proposed institutional designs based on lessons learned from the United States and the the existing condition in Indonesia. Factors supporting MSW management and technical aspects in MSW management in the United States are compared with the conditions in Indonesia. To obtain broader lessons from the United States, the history of MSW management is also explored
