Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyse Oberschöneweide and how the apparently conflicting desire to conserve heritage on the one hand, and the urge to reuse the industrial site on the other, has been solved by the heritage management of this site in particular and urban planning in general. To achieve this, the following question is answered: How have the tensions between adaptive reuse of the industrial site of Oberschöneweide in Berlin and the heritage conservation of this site been managed? To answer this question, qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews has been conducted with stakeholders of the negotiation process concerning the conservation and adaptive reuse in Oberschöneweide. The reuse of industrial heritage has led to the successful conservation and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites, but also the failure to conserve and reuse other parts of the industrial zone in Oberschöneweide.
