Abstract
An increased awareness and improved understanding of the ecosystem services approach has led to its mainstreaming in decision-making in planning. From the literature it stems that there exists a so called ‘implementation gap’ with regard to the ecosystem services approach in planning. The aim of this research is to analyze how the ecosystem services are being addressed in policy and to what extent they are implemented in the practice of spatial planning. Therefore, a comparative case study is executed between the cities of London (United Kingdom) & Rotterdam (Netherlands) with a specific focus on the coastal zone. From this research it results that the most important aspect in closing the implementation gap for ecosystem services lies in a combination of different tools in addressing multiple ecosystem services. This research provides a framework of which tools can be utilized for the different ecosystem services.
