Abstract

This research presents a case study of Groningen's Grote Markt, examining the impact of the removal of bus services on the mobility of the city's elderly population. This urban policy change in Groningen serves as a valuable example for other cities navigating urban planning and transportation policy making. The research reveals a gap in the involvement of elderly citizens in the decision-making processes and the effectiveness of alternative transportation solutions implemented in Groningen. The study employs a multifaceted approach, including an examination of policy documents, an interview with municipal representatives , and street interviews with elderly citizens within Groningen, to gather data. The findings indicate that the policy change in Groningen's Grote Markt has indeed affected the elderly population's mobility and possibly their social inclusion. The key message of the thesis is the necessity for a balanced and inclusive approach to urban planning and transportation policy-making, with a focus on the principles of Universal Design, Public Participation, and Aging in Place. The study contributes to the field by underscoring the significance of urban policy and planning decisions, as exemplified in the Groningen case, in shaping inclusive and just cities for all citizens. It calls for further research for more inclusive urban planning policies, particularly in cities like Groningen.
