Abstract
The interest of people from the Randstad in-migrating to Friesland show differences in social culture. This is visible in changing housing prices and in the changed composition of existing ‘old’ neighbourhoods in Frisian cities. The Transvaalwijk in Leeuwarden is one of those neighbourhoods which, because of its aesthetics and proximity to the city centre, has a strong attraction at newcomers. Longtime residents in the Transvaalwijk see their neighbourhood change which might have effects on their quality of life. This study is researching the willingness to accept and adapt newcomers by looking at opinions of long-time residents. In the qualitative research a number of inhabitants, living over 15 years in the Transvaalwijk, are questioned on two different scenarios with a fictional family of four who want to in-migrate in their neighbourhood. The first scenario has a financial background stating houses are cheaper in Leeuwarden compared to the Randstad. The second scenario emphasis the cleaner and healthier living environment of the Transvaalwijk. The neighbourhood, situated between two parks and the canal surrounding the inner city of Leeuwarden experiences less noise-, air-, and light pollution as compared to neighbourhoods in the Randstad. The proximity of green improves the quality of life in the neighbourhood. The focus on the attitude of long-time inhabitants towards newcomers with a different social yet a same ethnic background shows that the reason for migration is not of importance. The main reason to become a member of the community is to adapt to the prevailing culture. The findings of this research show as soon as newcomers become open and social in their appearance the neighbourhood responds likewise. While the neighbourhood is rejuvenated by newcomers the social capital remains strong. This could be because of the same ethnicity and the free of will migration. Things would look different when the reason of migration is forced by for example climate change.
