Abstract
With current climate change, cities, especially delta cities, need to adapt to cope with, for example, increased flood risk. The city of Zwolle is such a delta city at risk. Therefore, this article aims to identify efficient water management practices and measures taken in the delta city of Rotterdam and suggest these for implementation in the delta city of Zwolle. To do this, this research asks the question: How can the delta city of Zwolle improve its water management practices by implementing suitable water management strategies currently employed or planned by the delta city of Rotterdam? To answer this question, this research uses an interview, fieldwork, document analysis of existing climate adaptation strategies and mapping of locations of concepts and strategies. The main results of this study include an indication of the current and future water management practices in Rotterdam and Zwolle, a comparison between the locations of implementation in Rotterdam and Zwolle, and ultimately a map with locations of water management measures that Zwolle is advised to implement. With the aid of the research methods and the discovered results, this study concludes that Zwolle primarily needs to increase the scale of its water management measures if it aims to continue developing its urban structure. To add to this study, further research could focus on whether other delta cities have similar or different strategies when it comes to water management.
