Abstract
Because of ongoing globalization cities are trying to use iconic buildings to create an unique identity within a more uniform world. This research creates an understanding in how these buildings can enhance the urban identity of its surrounding area. This is relevant because, when many cities implement iconic structures in the same way, its very uniqueness may lead to placelessness. This research is done by studying two cases of iconic buildings namely: the Groninger Forum (Groningen, Netherlands) and the Hubei Landmark Tower (Shenzhen, China). By analyzing these iconic cases based on multiple levels of urban identity this research shows which aspects are vital to enhance the identity of the surrounding area.
