Abstract
For years Jakarta has experienced a strong conversion of green space. This thesis researches if brownfield redevelopment can be a possible solution to redirect the focus of developments in Jakarta away from the green zones. A brownfield location is defined as any previously built-up location that has lost its economic function, that is now idle or underused and where a process of redevelopment would physically and economically improve the location. The thesis describes the potential benefits and problems related to brownfield redevelopment. Based on the theoretical chapter an analysis table is developed, consisting of policies used in the international context. This schedule is used to research the possibility of brownfield redevelopment in the case of Jakarta. The concluding chapter compares the international context with the case of Jakarta and names a number of lessons to be learned for Jakarta.
