Abstract
This thesis has sought to find an answer to the question why and how project managers working for private solar field developers in the Netherlands would like and let citizens participate in the development of solar fields. It was found that this is on the one side the right thing to do, but is also a means to receive the necessary environmental permits from the municipalities. Moreover, providing citizens the opportunity to participate leads to less resistance, meaning better opportunities to continue in the future with other projects, without having a 'bad new'; it is a way to ensure the business. For municipalities it is advised to have clearer policies, regarding what is expected from project developers concerning participation.
