Abstract
In the context of the global energy transition, spatial differences are critical in the challenges and opportunities each place at any scale has. Historical city centres typically have little physical space for sustainability solutions and innovations, making them places of special interest. In this paper, a view is cast on the case of Amsterdam as a challenging case, and it is related to theories on technological transition and energy sustainability, as well as two places where experiments in this field are conducted. The paper explores the dynamics of experimental niches and the static dependent case within relevant transition models, and possible improvements in this dynamic and in the specific case of Amsterdam.
